In 2013 the Lloyd’s Motor Club were returning from a trip to the Normandy battlefields and dropped into Honfleur for lunch on the way back to England. Over lunch a plan was hatched to bring together the Lloyd’s Motor Club with our friends and colleagues in the Lloyd’s Yacht Club and Lloyd’s Wine Society for a joint event. With the Vieux Bassin (The Old Basin in the heart of Honfleur) looking magnificent in the sunshine we concluded Honfleur should be our target destination for the joint event. On returning to London there was no resistance to the proposed joint event and we soon had a date in the diary, the bank holiday weekend of early May 2014.

Simon Meade is an inspiring speaker who draws on his wealth of experience in delivering results in an environment where failure is not an option and mistakes costs lives. He takes this profound knowledge and applies this to his experience in business to draw valuable lessons of leadership, motivation, risk and complex project delivery.

Simon joined the Royal Air Force at 18 and was flying Harrier jets based in Germany by the time he was 21. He has served in the Falklands, Belize, fought operations in Bosnia and Iraq, and was an instructor in the RAF’s “Top Gun” weapons school. He ran the RAF’s public relations team and was the COO of a Harrier Squadron where he was in charge of off-base deployments, each time commanding 200+ personnel from multiple units (and Services!), having to mould them in to a cohesive operating unit where flight safety was a key outcome, in a matter of days.

But it is as the Leader of the RAF’s Aerobatic Display Team the Red Arrows, Simon learnt the skills of motivation and leadership, of risk and reward, of key personnel selection and task delivery, of learning from outcomes. Simon led 320 displays in 27 countries and was made an OBE, has as part of the role engaged with Royalty and world political leaders.

Now working as the Business Development Director for a Canadian Renewable Energy technology company, Simon has a busy personal life: has competed in the Network Q RAC rally, was an international Bobsleigh athlete and Board member of the UK governing body, been an advisor to a UK national charity, and currently represents Great Britain in his age group in triathlon.

Details of the 2016 LMC Karting day........

The entry list is now open for this year’s Lloyd’s Motor Club Karting Day, one of the highlights of the Club’s year, which will take place on Friday 2nd September at Buckmore Park, near Chatham, Kent.

This will be the 20th running of this very popular event, which takes place on the 1200-metre "International" outdoor circuit; we will be racing in Buckmore’s Sodikarts, giving speeds of up to 70mph while providing a high level of safety and comfort for all competitors.

The event offers great value for money, with full- and half-day options; each year, around 130 drivers of all levels of experience from the insurance market enjoy a full day of safe and exciting racing. This is an ideal event to which to invite your guests, friends or colleagues. Individual entries are also welcome – we will even find you a team to drive for in the endurance race!

In the morning we have a sprint event (several heats for each driver, followed by repechage finals), followed in the afternoon by a three-hour team endurance race.

The entry list can accommodate only 60 drivers for the sprint, but we can accept up to 35 teams (of three or four) for the endurance race.

We hope to see you on the grid!

Joining the RAF in 1968, Martin trained at RAF Stations at Church Fenton, Syerston, Oakington, Manby and Strubby and was then posted to the Vulcan aircraft. His first tour as a co-pilot was at Waddington in 44 Sqn and he then served as a captain in 50 Sqn also at Waddington, and in 1976 was assigned to Scampton as a Vulcan flying instructor on 230 OCU.

When the OCU closed, Martin transferred to 101 Sqn back at Waddington as the squadron QFI and Pilot Leader and was subsequently selected as captain-pilot of “Black Buck 1” for “Operation Corporate” , known today as the Falkland Islands Conflict. For his part in an extraordinary mission bombing the runway at Port Stanley as leader in “Operation Black Buck”, he was awarded the DFC, with his entire crew being “Mentioned in Dispatches”.

Martin retired from the RAF to become a commercial airline pilot. He first flew turboprops (SD360 andF27) before moving up to the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 757, and then on to 767's before retiring. Until sadly it was grounded in 2015, he acted as Air Operations Director for the “Vulcans to the Sky Trust”. The last flying Vulcan, aircraft no. XH558, was operated and is still owned by the Trust, a charity established to maintain and operate this remarkable aircraft. Martin was responsible for overseeing the safe operation of XH558. Married to Laura, Martin now lives near York with their two children

The-Women’s-Insurance-Net-Work will be kicking off 2015’s programme with a residential seminar at the beautiful Woodlands Park Hotel in Surrey. In our usual style, the agenda brings together topic issues from the insurance industry and the wider business world, this time covering climate change, consumer protection, mindfulness, amongst other topics.

Please do book your place early. Should you wish to invite a colleague, client or other business contact, please contact Helen or Patricia to enquire about guest places. We look forward to welcoming you to TWIN in February.
